can't get down the hole in room in 503 to get last postcard! WHY?

Another trick you may want to try is leaving the building, saving your game, and then re-entering the building. This is caused by a logic error in the game's programming - it assumes that when an option is presented, you take it, so as stated above, if you received the prompt but walked away, it's possible the game defaulted to the option as "used" and stopped listing it.
It also might be that you haven't received the prompt and haven't reloaded a save in that building - you may just not be positioned correctly to have the prompt appear. At several points in that game I found that character detection in both collision and triggered events seemed a bit sluggish and(at times) faulty. Try maneuvering around the hole in every position possible and slowly - the prompt may flash quickly, so keep your eyes open.

Are you getting the button prompt to "Examine" the hole when you get near it? "Examine" it and then you'll get a button prompt to "Climb down."
However, there are a couple glitches.
1) If you approach the hole and get the prompt and then walk away without climbing down, the prompt may not reappear!
2) If you reload a save in that level, the button prompt will be gone. So basically you have to do the whole level up to that hole without reloading a save.
If this is what happened to you, you may have to restart from a different save point. :(
