I would consider the best path gaming journalism. The problem is, if you're a game reviewer, you would actually have to spend perhaps 20+ hours on a game where a movie reviewer wouldn't spend more than four on any particular movie. But, otherwise, writing video game stuff for Mahalo and KidzWorld.com like I do makes for a great little part-time job that I really enjoy.

Exactly the idea I was looking for! Brilliant!

How would one go about breaking into said video game journalism? I fancy myself a pretty good writer (it's how I make a living, but for a completely different medium). If you have any projects currently underway, I'd love to help!

You sort of have to bootstrap your way in, because having published writing samples is important (not essential) to get published. I know, sort of a catch 22. In my case, I started by writing a blog (LegalArcade.com) so I at least had writing people could look at, and I slowly worked my way up in unpaid work until I had good samples. If you'd like, I could let you write something for my blog, email me at natemedwards[at]legalarcade[dot]com, and tell me about your writing and gaming experience.

There are a couple of people who are. They make money on professional tours. Mostly FPS games.

You can also mine objects and sell them on eBay and such. This is pretty much frowned on by most game developers. But entire companies do this oversees. Mostly in the country of Korea.

Good Luck!

Thanks man - I don't want the game developers mad at me. Mining is pretty uncool, I agree. I considered trying to be a tester, but don't know how to break into it. The search continues!!

Best option would be joining a pro tour such as that of EA

I watched the Madden Challenge while on a flight the other day and winner won $50,000, if you can earn that much by playing video games I will tip my hat to you.

There are many other games that are options in pro touring.

You can: Sony hires game testers. I had a friend who did this back in the dot-bomb days. He was paid about $8 an hour, and he got really sick of playing games that he didn't like.

One of the funniest stories I heard from there is that some PS2 game had a promotional Goo-Goo Dolls Video as part of the extras. About ten of the testers started the video one second apart. The result was hilarious!

There is also games journalism.

But keep in mind that it's highly competitive and you need excellent writing skills. You'll also find that while this involves playing videogames, there is just as much writing/research/etc involved.

There aren't really any glorified jobs playing games other than being a professional gamer. They're all a lot of work. And much of the time it isn't fun. That includes going "pro" at at game. The hours you'd need to log on won't always be for personal enjoyment.

If you're serious about it, then go for it! There are jobs playing games. Just keep reality in mind. Playing games can be hard work. But if it's what you love, then you should pursue it.
