Are there any PS3 exclusive games at the moment that would not run equally as well on the 360?

360 has the better graphcs processing unit, but the PS3 has the more powerful CPU in 'The Cell'. Just wondering if the PS3 can really out-reach the 360 in a currently released exclusive.

Could the 360 run Little Big Planet I wonder? I realise this question has a lot of variables, any discussion appreciated.

I think any game would run equally well on either platform. I mean, developers launch games for PS3 and DS simultaneously all the time. Are the two games identical though? Not at all.

Would the developers have to "dumb" things down to port a game from PS3 to 360? Possibly. Would it be a noticeable difference for the average player? I doubt it.

Look at all the games that are currently available on both consoles. There is often no discernible difference. If the PS3 is so vastly superior, more powerful or capable of so much more than the 360, why don't we already see a drastic difference between the games released for both platforms?

Quote from Hideo Kojima about PS3 exclusivity:
"Metal Gear Solid 4 is only scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3 at the current time," he told the Japanese game magazine. "Of course we could port it to other consoles, but doing so would require additional staff and research and development costs. If I were to make games for the Xbox 360 or the [Nintendo] Revolution, I'd rather create original titles that match each console's audience, instead of the Metal Gear Solid series."

The rest of the interview is interesting as well. He clearly thinks the PS3 is the superior console, as far as capabilities go.

PS: But I'm not so sure MGS4 was PS3 exclusive solely because the console is "superior." Konami has always tended to release their MGS games for Sony consoles, with other platforms sneaking in here and there. But the Sony affiliation has been constant. Not to mention all the Sony plugs within the MGS4 game. Clearly, there was more than just an exclusivity deal signed between the two companies. Sony Pictures is also making the Metal Gear Solid movie and the MGS4 20th anniversary cell phone was manufactured by Sony.

Yes, MGS4 has been a Sony exclusive, but to turn down the rumors that it was coming to the Xbox, Kojima at one point said that it could not possibly be played on the 360.

Also, the PS3 and DS point at the beginning is silly, those aren't even nearly the same game if they come out on the PS3 and DS at the same time, they just have the same name and the same brand or general gameplay.

So you're saying that Puzzle Quest on the Xbox 360 and on the DS are not the same game? Have you played them both? Because I have. Other than some basic controls and, of course, graphics, the two games are identical. Same quests, same gameplay, same music and sound effects.

And that was my point. Any game would run equally well on any platform (to answer the original question). There would just have to be changes made to a greater or lesser degree. So, yes, both LittleBigPlanet and MGS4 could feasibly be ported to Xbox 360.... If it weren't for the fact that features actually had to be cut from MGS4 simply because the game was too big to fit on a 50GB bluray disc, which means it would be pretty much impractical to port to the 360. In that case, it might be more a media issue than a console superiority issue. I'd also like to point out that Kojima never said, at least from what I could find, that it "could not possibly be played on the 360." He said that since the game was developed and optimized specifically with PS3 architecture in mind, a port "might not be possible." I think there's a difference.

We have no idea. It would require the programmers to find work-arounds to make it work on the second system, no matter which side the games came from.

It has been said several times that Metal Gear Solid 4 couldn't run on the 360 (Konami themselves said that, I mean) but we still don't actually know.

You'd really need a game programmer who's worked on each system to know for sure. My husband is a professional video game programmer and he says the PS3 is way more powerful, but it's also way more complex. The majority of game developers don't know how to take full advantage of the system's capabilities and that is why many of the games that come out for both platforms look virtually the same.

Most of those games are also developed for the 360 first and then ported to the PS3, rather than the other way around, and I think that says something about the topic as well.

The basic answer is no, there are no PS3 exclusive titles that would not run equally well on the 360. The question is rather moot, insofar as that it's an exclusive title to the PS3, and so we'd never know.

The main point to understand is that, yes, the PS3 is far more advanced and far more complex, and thus nobody has taken it to the full limit of it's potential. However, what that basically equates to is that the 360 is the best out-of-the-box deal - if it's so convoluted to make a game for the PS3, and it's not going to look any different from a 360 game anyway, why bother building it on the PS3 first and then porting it to the 360? I don't think the fact that most games are built on the 360 first and ported to the PS3 says anything about the topic, really - it's a simple matter of ease of programming. Sure, I could do something in a really difficult manner, then move it to a new location where doing it would be easier - or I could do it in the way that's easier to begin with, and move it to the difficult location later.

The 360 has the XNA architecture that allows for personal programmers like myself to build a "homebrew" program or game, and make it available for play on xboxLIVE. That's not just building a fan base, that's creating future employees, something the PS3 isn't even considering. They lost the exclusivity of the FInal Fantasy franchise with FFXIII, and the fact that they are still the most expensive console on the market is a hindrance to their sales. Just because their system is more powerful doesn't necessarily make it a superior console.

I have seen MGS4, and nothing about it strikes me as being completely impossible to pull off on a 360. It's just a matter of exclusivity, time, and funding. I remember the Metal Gear Solid references to the Playstation, but I also remember similar references to the XBOX and Gamecube when versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 were made for them. It's just a little fourth wall humor that Hideo Kojima likes to include, in my opinion. If there were any games that would be absolutely impossible for the 360 to play that the PS3 could pull off, it'd be touted as such in its information, akin to the Duracell vs. Energizer commercials. We won't see anything even close to that until the developers learn to better use the architecture of the PS3, and by the time that happens, we'll probably have a new generation of consoles out. I'm not being pessimistic, either - has anyone else noticed that the PS2 still has games being released for it? What is the point of having a next-gen console if developers get so frustrated by trying to use it that they revert to your previous-generation console for ease of use?
