After installing original Call of Duty v1.1 for PC, Single player works but not Multiplayer?

When I select multiplayer the screen goes blank and a box comes up and says CallofDuty.exe has stopped working Windows is searching for a solution. Comp is 2 yrs old. Whats going on? Why does single player work and not multiplayer? Is there a way to fix this?

try installing the patches, since you won't be able to play on many servers without them.
