Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Drmatt, if you're asking me if I'm hinting... no not at all. I think you're awesome. Actually, I think everyone here is great.

It would be interesting for everyone to be able to see the patterns that have existed in the past. I don't know for sure that some of my answers have purposefully been voted down, but I think they have. Be nice to know that I'm not some sort of paranoid freak... but I'll rest easy knowing that votes can finally be seen.

I don't think that you should give amnesty.

If folks have been doing this, they should be outed.

You know that's a good way to look at it Angilla.

I think I'm a convert after thinking about it in your shoes. You're right.

@robbrown No, not you hinting.

@jasoncalacanis said "hint hint" and was wondering if JC thought I was doing something unsavory with voting. Just looking for some clear communication.

Are you hinting at me? Or was that just a general "hint"?

Mreh, I'm glad they're giving the amnesty... let the people who have done this in the past get their chance to say "oh #@$!" and change their ways before they're thrown out to be flogged in public.

well, it would be more interesting if we didn't give amnesty for past votes I can tell you that!!! (we can see the voting patterns already.... hint hint!).

I'm glad, because it ensures that no one can abuse the unhelpful votes to promote their answers or cut down other people or statements they disagree with.

Am I correct in assuming Best Answer votes will remain private, because the answerers are hidden?

Good idea - will this also mean that the best answers will be shown under each username?

I don't suppose you would be interested in giving the asker of a question the choice as to whether they want this information private or public. Many forums do this for polls.

Many people seem to think that the transparency will prevent people from being vindictive because they will be outed, but I think there is a chance we are opening a whole new door to vindictiveness. Now that people will know who voted them as unhelpful they may be more likely to try and get back at them despite the fact that it will be public. I'd hate to think the worst in people, but I thought I'd mention this possible outcome.

I just love that Mahalo is always evolving and open to suggestions from its users.

This is not a good idea. Everyone takes the secret ballot for granted these days, but it wasn't always that way. It was actually a 19th century reform first widely implemented in Tasmania. Now all the real democracies use it. It's currently a big issue in the laws about unionization drives, where unions want to end secret balloting. Secret balloting does not tell you why people vote the way they do, but it does make sure that they are not intimidated into voting other than as they wish.

I am curious, will this increase or decrease the amount of votes on the site? My opinion is voting will decrease a lot once it is public domain.

I've learned that people are much more nasty when they believe no one is looking. I hope this will lead people to vote down only genuinely unhelpful answers instead of answers they disagree with. And I hope they people will be willing vote down unhelpful answers even if they agree with them.

I am surprised at how fearful people are of saying something that may offend someone else. If you believe it for a good reason and can say it politely and without anger, go for it!

By the way, the picture is from 30 Rock when "Tracy Jordan" suggested that blacks not vote. Obviously, I don't think any group of people should be excluded from voting, with the possible exception of those who don't bother to learn about the candidates. Similarly, don't vote down answers unless you have a good reason :)

Rock the Vote! It's good to know, finally people will have some well thought out votes! You might need to make it so that people can cancel their vote if they accidentally clicked on something... or else a simple vote error can turn out to be something else.

Kinda reminds me of the- you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. I think it's better than the ol' way- but I can't help but think that it will also have it's problems. Also- why do you need the 'no' vote anyway? If people don't like it- can't they simply skip over it?
