At one time, diesel cars were a relatively common sight in the United States. In Europe, they still are, accounting for about 40% of new cars sold each year. Diesel fuel has higher energy content than gasoline, and diesel performance is usually better in terms of engine output. These factors also mean that vehicles running on diesel put less global-warming pollution into the air. Thus, it might seem that in today's world of rising temperatures and fuel prices, diesel is ripe for a surge in popularity in North America.

The ideal car of the near future will be a hybrid electric-diesel running on biodiesel. Concept cars of this sort have already been shown, they just need to get the price down a bit and make biodiesel more widely available.

I think diesel vehicles are less polluting than gasoline ones however diesel vehicles are not what we are looking for to preserve our environment. http://ezinearticles.com/?Diesel-vs-Regular-Gasoline---Which-is-Better-for-the-Environment?&id=946207

Have you seen a truck belching black smoke? Most diesels used to be that bad. They are not any more, modern diesels and diesel fuels have been designed to reduce their amount of air pollution. In addition, diesels are more fuel efficient and therefor put less CO2 in the air per mile. The ideal car of the near future will be a hybrid electric-diesel running on biodiesel. Concept cars of this sort have already been shown, they just need to get the price down a bit and make biodiesel more widely available.
