According to consumer reports, Japanese cars are the most reliable.
-quote-
"Toyota had the most vehicles with “recommended” ratings with 21 of 22 vehicles tested winning the honors, followed by Honda with 11 of 12 tested vehicles. GM had 10 “recommended” ratings out of 27 tested models, followed by Ford with 8 out of 15 vehicles and Nissan with 8 of 13 models.
Japanese models also surpassed rivals when when owners were asked if they were satisfied with their vehicles. Japanese automakers filled 21 of the 33 slots on the magazine’s “most satisfying” list. The hybrid Toyota Prius, powered by electric batteries and a gas engine, tied with Toyota’s Lexus LS430 luxury sedan as the most satisfying vehicle."

Answered Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
Are cars from Japan reliable?
Which cars the Americans think are the most reliable? Ford, Cadillac, Chrysler, Chevy or Buick? The answer is far remote. As per the
latest reliability survey by Consumer Reports, Japanese cars have once again made it to the top. Out of the 48 models that were ranked in
the reliability survey, 33 models were Japanese. This clearly shows the domination of Japanese cars even in the United States when it comes to reliability.

From my experience with several Japanese, American and European vehicles, Japanese "engines" are typically the most reliable. A neighbor of mine in the rural mid-west commented that Subaru Boxer engines were used for light aircraft (that is a true sign of reliability). Though the usual problem for Japanese vehicles (at least from my experience) is rust. The metal used (at least older Japanense cars) was very prone to rusting through, especially around the wheel wells. There are plenty of examples of very high mileage American and European cars from the 80s still on the road today, but I would argue more from Japan are still running strong (sans part of the rear quarter panels..)
