The colonies were quite prone to internal conflict. Near the end of the revolution, the French government remarked that trading with the 13 colonies was more like trading with 13 different countries.

This issue was only slightly approached by the Articles of Confederation, but the Constitution that was later drafted (and we still have in the United States today) imposed a stronger federal government.

HOWEVER, do not fall under the impression that this instantly united the colonies. Tensions continued to exist between the colonies in numerous areas of governmental ideas, and these would eventually come to a boiling point with the Civil War.
