He is the only President I know of who served one term and did not seek a second term.
In this era, it would be unheard of for a President not to seek another term (besides Lyndon Johnson, who knew he probably wasn't even going to win the primary, let alone a general election).
I would ask him what made him decide to do that. Why would you serve as President and upon realizing what the potential of the office was, why not go for a second term?
The President, even then, was an extremely powerful position. And we were coming up on the Civil War. Polk had won a war, and could have possibly helped hold the nation together. So why not try?

Has the Speaker of the House of Representatives ever been elected President? Yes. What would you ask the 11th President, James K. Polk?
With his election, "Manifest Destiny" had it's champion.

• Considering that he had gained California and the Oregon territory, I guess he decided that he had done enough. Gone fishin'

Good question. The acquisition of territory during his administration led immediately to the Crisis of 1850

James Knox Polk, 1845-1849, AKA "young hickory", literally worked himself to the ground. I would ask him "Why, Mr. President did you work so hard?" Few presidents have been able, since Polk, to deliver on their campaign promises like he did in only one term. I admire his accomplishments just for the fact that he actually got things done and he is no comparison to today's politicians that hardly get anything done in 8 years.
