Is this photo purporting to show members of Congress goofing around on their laptops while in session authentic?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/20671413@N02/4095221759/

Received this in a mass e-mail, which usually aren't that trustworthy, but the photo certainly looks real. Is this a PhotoShop job? If it IS real, would it keep you from voting for these elected officials again?

Interesting that you bring this up. I too saw this picture in circulation and it would seem that it is raising some eyebrows.

These two members are representing Connecticut on a very important budget related matter. So...if they are playing games on their computer should I vote for them the next time they run? HECK NO...if that budget is going to impact my bottom line then one of them winning a game of Solitaire is not what they should be doing whilst their salary coming from my tax dollars.

Two US democratic legislators were caught playing Solitaire on the their laptops during an important budget debate in the State House thanks to a photo made by an AP photographer. The photo shows two US legislators - a male and a female - playing the computer game on their computers while the House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr. delivers his presentation during a debate that took place on Monday, August 31. The duo's faces cannot be seen, but despite that, both of them have been identified -- they are Barbara Lambert and Jack F. Hennessy. It is not clear whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the two.

Interestingly, the photo also shows laptop of a representative just behind Lambert and Hennesy, playing the clip of a baseball game. The owner of the laptop is not in the photo frame, however, so he or she could not be identified.

Dear Rep Watson, There is a photo going all over the Net of Barbara Lambert and Jack Hennessey playing Solitaire on their computer while we the Taxpayers are paying them to WORK. Also in the photo you can see 2 other reps on computers, on Facebook and looking at baseball scores, while Congress is in session.

they will be voted out of office ASAP. I don't know you--you may be very conscientious and actually earn your pay. I hope so. Taxpayers and voters are very mad about this.

Recently congress aggressively pasted items on anti-internet-gambling-legislation concerning online gambling sites like Pokerstars, Full Tilt Poker and others. That picture was likely related to their viewing of those sites and not about them "goofing off" during sessions.

After your comment I looked closer to that and agree. I thought it looked like poker sites on first glance. Sorry.

My question here would be can we know for sure this is "congress"

yaaaa it was real take a look

Photo image is real (AP photographer Jessica Hill) Varied Response, according to email version. First, some email alludes or states that this photo was taken at the US Congress. Wrong. They are Connecticut state legislators in the Connecticut House of Representatives.

Again I'm sorry. My comment was left based on oversight or maybe under-sight since I didn't see what I thought I first saw.

It's not a singular phenomenon. I'm also not a PhotoShop guru, but based on the answers I saw, it's real.
One thing I am sure. The pictures here, are real. And it's the parlament of Romania. So, you are still good there!

I don't know if that photo is, but I know congress people do. My brother was an intern for the congress and he said that his senator just goofed off all the time on game websites and such. So, I'm sure they goof off, but I can't see the picture that you posted.

The photo seems real... and... what the general public doesn't often see is this kind of behavior in congress. There are times when people talk and talk (filibustering) and some just use their time to play politics.

There might be many reasons why these congress-people are doing this. Not all is "bad" or disrespectful...

This is real but not exactly as you say. According to snopes.com (the best website to check out rumors like this). This photo was taken in the August 31 2009 sessions of the Connecticut house of representatives. The photo was taken by Jessica Hill of the associated press, it was during a lengthy speech on the state budget. This photo has been creeping up since august being attributed to various branches of government. You can read the full report by snopes at the website below

Tom Foley is running for senate in 2010. He wrote a letter in regards to the photograph, giving the photo credibility but not to the US Congress. It was to the Democratic legislators of Connecticut.
A copy of the letter here:

Other similar problems plague our elected officials all the time.

Here is Senator Robert Byrd napping during one session.

Other videos showing senators sleeping on the job abound on the news networks. I would rather they be playing cards, at least they can hear what is being said.

But, no the picture is not of the US Congress, nor was it created in Photoshop.
