I think it makes sense and would imagine that unlocked would be how smartphones are sold in the first place. Can you imagine if you bought a car and that car only ran on Exxon/Mobil gasoline? Can you imagine if you bought a television and it would only receive Comcast cable? Can you imagine you bought a house phone/land line and could only use AT&T for long distance calls? I think it only makes sense to have the choice of the carriers and plans you want to use when activating and or using your smartphone.
Hopefully this will be a step in the direction of smartphones all being sold unlocked to begin with. I know the way they are sold here in the US has the price of the phone discounted to the buyer in lieu of the purchase of a predetermined carrier plan but I feel that way of doing things is just backwards and would rather see all smartphones sold at full price and with the choice of data/voice carriers being left 100% up to the buyer.
At the very least the option to buy the discounted smartphone with a preset data/voice carrier requirement OR the full price unlocked full carrier option smartphone should be offered to every consumer in the market for such a phone.
My smartphone, the Google Nexus One I won here in Mahalo Answers, came in the box unlocked why can't this be the way every smartphone is sold?
