Their historical significance now seems to lie in the simple fact that they have been around for such a long time.
The most commonly used name seems to be "red telephone box" or "red phone box", but at the time of their design they were mainly referred to as kiosks. The design was developed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924. After the introduction and evolution of phone booths in previous decades there had eventually came a desire to create a standardised cast-iron design with a degree of elegance. Red was chosen as the colour seemingly in order to make them more visible, but UK post boxes were also coloured red at the time, so it made sense in this way as well. The design of the phone boxes evolved over the years.
Later, double decker buses also came to be painted red.
