I always thought the only reason to buy your own box was if you were stealing cable.

What 3rd party set top boxes work with Time Warner cable to receive unscrambled digital channels?
I got rid of DirecTV and opted for the $15/mo broadcast package on Time Warner. They want to rent me a converter box but I would rather buy one on eBay for my SD TVs. (My new plasma can receive clear QAM). Will any old cable box tuner work for this? How can I check compatibility? I don't expect the customer service people at Time Warner to help.

Just to clarify, are you saying that you can get a better image or more channels or something if you buy your own box? Because if that's the case then maybe I should buy one also. I always thought the only reason to buy your own box was if you were stealing cable.

Nope - just doing it to save money. If I buy a box as opposed to renting one from them it will pay for itself in less than a year. The cable companies don't exactly advertise this because they make a lot of money off of equipment rentals. Doesn't work for scrambled signals in most cases but the channels I am going to pay for are transmitted "in the clear".
