I think if your letterbox surroundings are grey, then I'm thinking that your brightness and or your backlight is turned up to high. I have played with plenty of HDTV settings and never seen any options for turning the bars different colors, but I have seen people turn up backlights and brightness to the max and turn all of their "blacks" significantly greyer. You might not notice in the regular picture, but the bars are clumping together enough of the black that its noticeable.

Turn down your brightness and or backlight a few clicks and let us know what happened.

i adjusted backlight and brightness and it just turned the gray to a darker gray. it hasny always been like this, either. it was black several days ago, then without warning switched to gray. could it be a directv settings issue?

I doubt that it has anything to do with the input, but I would try other inputs. Do you have other inputs you could try out? Maybe a straight regular cable or an antenna that you could pick up some over the air cable HD programming?

I might also try one of those DVD refernce tuners, they're a DVD movie that is just for helping you tune the color and settings on the TV.

Its a setting on the receiver. Go to display setting on the main menu of the receiver and you will see a thing called pillar box. You can select the color of the pillars there.
