Very interesting question. As for odds, I would bet that the odds of two people meeting and falling in love on one of these shows is about the same as finding true love in any other random place, like a supermarket, for example. You also have to factor in the fact that many of the "contestants" on these kind of shows are not looking for love at all, but rather are just hoping to get their 15 minutes of fame or exposure to further their careers.

The biggest reality show relationship success story probably belongs to season 1 Bachelorette Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter. The became engaged on the series finale of their show, which was filmed in 2002, and they were married in December of 2003. They had their first child in 2007, and are expecting another in the spring of 2009. They are the only couple out of 4 Bachellorette seasons that is still together.

Another success story belongs to Byron Velvick (pro Bass fisherman; Season 6 Bachelor) and Mary Delgado. They have had the only enduring relationship out of the first 11 seasons of The Bachelor. They are currently engaged to be married, although, they have had their share of relationship issues, including battery arrests.

So, as far as The Bachelorette and The Bachelor series, there have only been 2 success stories out of 15 couples. That puts the true success rate at about 13%.

If you take into account relationships of 6 months or longer, Season 4 bachelorette DeAnna Pappas and Jesse Csincsak would qualify. They dated for over 6 months but broke up in November 2008.

Aside from the Bachelor series, another reality TV relationship success story belongs to David and Linda from 'The Next Joe Millionaire.' They have been dating exclusively since the end of the show.

Another reason I think finding love is probably uncommon on these shows is because true love usually presents itself when you least expect it. I met the love of my life on a public beach far away from either of our homes at the time. There's just no rhyme or reason to matters of the heart.

Ryan, Trista, and Max Sutter

All answers were good, but you gave some specific couples as examples, which is what put you over the top.

Interesting question, because these artificial shows create much fame and fortune for these reality stars, yet few if any have stayed together from my research. The best success has been Trista and Ryan from "The Bachelorette" show. You can keep up to date with this through Reality TV Magazine or Reality TV World. For instance, there was a recent article on December 12th, 2008 that stated, "So far, Trista and Ryan are the only couple that have stayed together from either The Bachelorette or The Bachelor reality TV series." They are now expecting a baby girl. See the article here: http://www.realitytvmagazine.com/blog/2008/12/12/former-bachelorette-couple-trista-and-ryan-sutter-are-expecting-a-girl/

Now, as for other shows that there has been successes of longer term relationships and marriages. Another example is Rob and Amber Mariano of "Survivor" show. Rob and Amber went on to do "The Amazing Race" as a couple.

What does this say? Just because people meet on reality television shows, does not mean they are encountering what some would call, "true love" in the sense of a relationship. As with any relationship, it takes work and 100% from both sides.

Success is a subjective term, but whenever I have watched "The Bachelor" series and have followed it through to completion, I have been repeatedly struck by the sad and almost pathetic situations in which these supposedly "glamorous" women are placed.

Perhaps it is even less fortunate, even more sad, to understand that these poor, lovely women have put themselves in these positions, themselves. This self inflicted humiliation and public rejection is difficult watch, even more difficult to understand.

So I don't watch it anymore, as my opinion is one of disgust. Disgust for the participants and disgust at my own voyeurism.

The notion of attraction for these folks is comprised of jealousy, unethical and unkind acts toward one another, a very sick level of unhealthy competitiveness and is based upon the mistaken idea that because a person is physically attractive and can perform on camera, that such qualities might somehow add up and finally translate into a perfect selection for a life partner.

Compatibility is not sufficiently explored or properly developed under such circumstances and so it seems like a no brainer that generally these matches have no staying power. Just because Ken and Barbie look great in their magical wardrobes, in their cardboard dreamhouse and plastic sportscar does not mean that they LIKE each other or are compatible in the lasting and complex ways that are required for a substantial relationship.

"The Bachelor" is a television program which was created upon a seriously flawed set of ideas and will never produce a permanent or deep coupling of two people.
