Reality TV has been here since the 1980s and 1990s, and it will always remain popular simply because people like to gossip. It's here to stay! People like to see things that are real, real life stories, people's struggles, victories, and defeats. People like to see a winner and loser. People enjoy seeing shows that are not going to involve an actor, yet more so what can happen in everyone's real life. Also, since reality television costs less to produce than other television genres, this is usually a money maker from the start with the millions of dollars that come in from advertising once it is a hit.

Check out the sources, and read about reality television, and you'll quickly see that it's here to stay. Do a search on Google Trends and you will see that people are still looking and searching for reality television shows such as "American Idol" which every year people search for. Reality TV isn't going anywhere. The networks love it beause its super cheap for them. They can churn out shows quick if they need to fill a timeslot and on a very cheap dime. Then if its a success they'll make millions in advertising money. It's a great scheme for them and as long as the public keeps eating it up, it will keep on coming. I know that people won't give up on it because somewhere in our psyche, we have a great desire to watch other people in stressful situations. We like to watch other people struggle and overcome difficulties and sometimes just plain act like a bunch of rednecks.

It's beautiful isn't it?

Reality shows will probably be replaced by gladiator combat as popular culture sinks to the lowest possible level. One already sees rap performers, reality shows, and mock gladiator contests. Eventually producers will see that the real thing was immensely popular for hundreds of years and will find some poor and backward nation or neighborhood in which to produce the shows. Gladiators will kill each other, wild animals, and criminals, and wild animals will kill members of unpopular minorities. This will appeal to the basest aspects of human nature, thereby having the most widespread and long lasting appeal of entertainment types. I hope I am wrong, but how else can one explain rap, reality shows, etc than by a steady degeneration of mass culture?

It will always be around as a bargain-basement timeslot filler, but as a "fad", it is on its deathbed. Few people are even aware "Survivor" is still on the air, and considering the increasingly idiotic premises these programs have (it all went downhill from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swan_(TV_series)), it's clear that all the creativity has been juiced out of this one.

Watch for "reality" TV to sputter off into obscurity on small-audience cable channels.

Considering Reality TV was creating during strike and recession type conditions, and we're heading down that same path, i'd assume they are going to become even more predominant again, and then after we turn the corner.

Candid Camera was on the radio in the early days. Same thing with Game Shows. Home movies and audio existed before that. Gossip "rags" and newsblotters are ubiquitos. And, as someone else pointed out, Gladiator's were satisfying the voyeur in all of us (along with that Lady Godiva and that Emporer with his special clothes).

I can't see how we'll ever get away from wanting to watch ourselves/others. It's an essential human trait.

Now, with everyone having a camera everywhere. People will continue to self produce it. Jennycam, AnaVoog, and others pioneered 24-7 views of their lives on the web. YouTube, Stickam, and a bunch of others will ensure that, even if we somehow lose TV's advertising model, that we'll still be watching other's realities.

If you want hard #'s from TV execs, well, I'm too lazy to look them up. :) Why? Cause I believe that the viewership of a reality show is based on the quality of the show, not that it's a reality show per se.

I agree with one of the post's above, Reality TV is here to stay because society loves to watch other people.
