Rumors have been going around, but at this time Fox has not canceled Dollhouse. Episode 13 will not be aired in the US and will only be available on DVD due to the final episode of Prison Break.

1) the whedon fans (browncoats) blame fox for ruining firefly
2) browncoats are fans of every actor who has ever been in any whedon production, evar.
3) therefore, browncoats love felicia day. (vi on buffy. beautiful female lead in dr. horrible. star, author & creator of the guild and she's twitterfamous http://twitter.com/feliciaday )
so: fox creates a tempest in a twitterpot. they do the following:
1) notice that internet star felicia is featured in an episode. (ep 13, supposedly the season finale)
2) fox announces that the season will end with ep 12 and the only way for anyone to ever see ep 13 will be to buy it on DVD.
genius!
now the twitterverse is abuzz with the digital equivalent of villagers carrying torches and pitchforks screaming "release episode 13! we love felicia day!"
fox will sit back, shocked, shocked that there is demand for this particular episode and that this simple scheduling decision is getting so much press coverage. at a certain point, fox will capitulate to the pressure, the browncoats will rejoice in the streets and there will be another round of free publicity for fox.

My theory: Fox knows these facts: 1) the whedon fans (browncoats) blame fox for ruining firefly

I don't think TV execs care about Whedon fans. After all, on Nathan Fillion's actor bio for Castle doesn't even MENTION Firefly. They'll mention the failed show DRIVE, but not mention Firefly? Stoopid.
