Not to be difficult, but why can't it be both? Why does the new have to be "serious?" Have you seen the type of events that pass for news these days? If you stop and think about, it's often quite funny (and sometimes sad).
I say that John Stewart has taken a unique approach to reporting news and current events, generating meaningful discussion and bringing light to important issues of the day...all the while, bringing a few smiles to his viewers.

Is there a bias with both of them? Yes. At least Beck is clear on his stand. It is a shame that many of the network and cable news shows are as honest as Beck on the direction they are coming from. MSNBC is the democrat media vehicle.

Even when I don't agree with him, I'm very glad Jon et al are framing for us the ridiculous picture that is contemporary politics.
And on a fun note, I was just by their studio in NYC & saw a sign hanging over the door reading "Abandon news all ye that enter here..."

The Daily Show is comedy and commentary on the news, There is a certain amount of news included but it is not intended to be unbiased. It is the same with Beck. As a matter of fact, yesterday he came right out and said that he is NOT a newscaster, he said he is a commentator. He does not pretend to be anything but a commentator. Is there a bias with both of them? Yes. At least Beck is clear on his stand. It is a shame that many of the network and cable news shows are as honest as Beck on the direction they are coming from. MSNBC is the democrat media vehicle.

In our kingdom only the jester is free to speak the truth; so it is, of course, both. The news is used as a means to a comic end, but they are unfortunately often much more informative than other outlets of broadcast news. The 24 hour newsfotainment cycle has become so vacuous that someone giving a bit of background in order to deliver a punchline actually tastes like journalism. Even when I don't agree with him, I'm very glad Jon et al are framing for us the ridiculous picture that is contemporary politics.
