Without a doubt, Kalane and I watched it end to end in just a few days, we couldn't put it down. The characters are great, the story is epic and the visuals are unlike anything out there.
Here is a snip, little graphic as it is a battle scene

Completely under-rated, under-appreciated. Absolutely brilliant series.
Also, it starred The Kurgan from Highlander (Clancy Brown) as the bad guy -- how awesome is that?!?
Deadwood (aka, the Al Swearingen Show : )) was my second fave, followed closely by Rome, which was also spectacular.

The Comeback is a real-footage style fictional show starring Lisa Kudrow as a pathetic character who lost her IT Girl celebrity status years ago and attempts to go on a reality show and take a part in a new (terrible) sitcom to regain her fame.
Unscripted is also done in somewhat of a realistic style. It is a fictional show with some improvised dialogue based on the lives of three aspiring actors and actresses playing exaggerated versions of themselves and depict their successes and amusing misadventures in their Hollywood aspirations. Frank Langella is interesting, if a bit pretentious, as their acting teacher and aspiring actress Jennifer Hall is adorable.

These may not be the best HBO shows ever but these are a few gems that you may not have heard of and are worth checking out if you're interested in "Brilliant But Cancelled" television.

Favorites:
Sopranos: no brainer, pretty much everyone loves this show.
OZ (most of the OZ seasons are short, but it still packs a punch)
Deadwood: this is an acquired taste, you either love it or hate it. Swedgin!
The Wire: Some of the best crime drama ever filmed.
The only show I would warn against is John from Cincinnati, which was cancelled after one season. That show made absolutely zero sense.

Best HBO TV Series Ever?
I'm a huge fan of HBO, usually picking up seasons on DVD (HBO only recently
came to Canada directly) and currently watching True Blood and just started
watching The Wire on DVD. But I'm looking for what some of your favorite
HBO series are so I might discover something new to check out?

I loved carnivale and was upset that it was canned after 2 seasons, they had so much more to tell. I heard rumors of a mini-series to help wrap things up but it never happened :(

One night about two years ago when I was out and about in LA, I ran into the actor who played Ben Hawkins (the main character, shown above -- real name: Nick Stahl) -- we had cigars and reminisced on the awesomeness of Carnivale. (True Story).

"Dream On" was a hoot -- very original and entertaining, ran from 1990-1996. http://www.imdb.com/rg/videos-title/summary/video/hulu/vi1621032985/

This is probably not going to be an incredibly popular choice, but I recommend checking out two half-hour sitcoms that HBO briefly ran and then canceled before reaching a second season: The Comeback and Unscripted.
This is quite easy: almost all of their shows are really good. They have had a few misses, but overall their shows are outstanding. I also collect their DVD boxed sets because it is cheap entertainment. Why buy three DVD movies for $50 when I can buy 13 hours (plus supporting material) of great TV for about as much?
