Trying to think of heavy cheap clean granular material. Going to stuff socks w/ it, use as weights. Thinking pennies. Thoughts? #fb

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Not knowing what your intent is for useing such a weight the first thing that comes to my mind would be marbles.
Marbles are easy to obtain at reasonable prices depending on how many your needing.
Use various sizes so that in the event of a hole in the sock, unless its a really big hole your not going to lose all your marbles.
Marbles don't tarnish when wet like pennies would, nor would they be as abrasive as pennies.
Items such as beans or rice could potentially spoil, rot or draw the attention of hungry rodents.
Sand would potentially drain out through a very small hole in a sock.
A sock full of marble would be malleable, giving you the option of forming a sock full to fit a varity of spaces.

Not really sure I want to know what your looking to weigh down, but a sockful of marbles is something I can see as working as a cheap and effective weight for a multitude of uses.

Pennies have edges and might not be so good as weights, in case you "miss." How about beans? Not so edgy, more malleable and rather heavy. Just a thought. Or rice. Wouldn't go for sand in case of leaks and breaks.

Sand might work. Might want to put it in a plastic bag before stuffing it into the sock. Nuts, bolts and washers. Unopened cans of food. Big rocks. Aquarium gravel.
