trying to play a video file.

i have tried vlc already with no luck.

i am trying to play a video file and it just shows "use windows media player" and stops in any media player i use. when you try it in wmp it starts a web site tells you that you need this codac and it gives you a link to download vlc.exe tried reinstalling vlc with that link still doesn't work at all.

the file is 690+ mb's why can't i play it?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Ok, First I need to know the file type.

Follow These Steps to get it.
1. Open My Computer
2. Click on the Tools Menu > Folder Options
3. Click On the View Tab.
4. Un-Check The Box that says Hide Extensions for known file types.
5. Click Apply then Ok.
6. Locate your video file and tell me the extension that "filename.ext" the .ext part is your extension.

The following steps are for windows xp. In windows vista you can go into control panel to find 'Folder Options'.

Once you find your file type tell me and i will see if i can find a solution.

Great Job with this Answer.

I think that is not a video file as .avi formats should normally play with any player including WMP (default player) by MS. Sometimes it is another file with extension changed or a malware or some thing....

First, Try DivX Video Player (free). http://www.divx.com

If all else fails:
Try moving the file to another folder on your computer & then re-download it.

If its a torrent check the health of the torrent. If its low chances are the file is corrupt or not complete.

I think your right. If I were you, I'd delete it. There's always a possibility someone bugged it with a trace-rout bug. (like uncle sam)

Sounds to me that you torrented a virus or other form of malware. You should give up on it, delete it, and run a virus scan on your computer immediately.
