What's wrong with my acer aspire one? Details inside
I have an 8.9 inch aspire one, the Linux model. I bought it used and the previous owner upgraded the ram and the solid state drive. The ssd is now just a 16 gb compact flash card. I have easy peasy, an OS using ubuntus netbook remix. Recently, it has started randomly turning off after about 4-5 minutes of operation. It does this on both battery power and when plugged in. It also does this no matter what operating system I am in. I have put it in recovery mode, did a memory check, and tried a bootable USB drive. In every case it shut off. It is out of warrenty so I gatta fix it myself. I am fully capable of dissambling it and putting it back together so if you need anymore input from me to help feel free to ask. I cannot make any promises but If I can get it fixed I would most likely tip the person that gave me the proper answer. Thanks in advance for the help!!

This probably won't help you much, but in general I've seen this types of problems numerous times, both with desktops and with laptops. Most common causes are several hardware components, in this order:
1. Internal power supply (this is the component that distributes power to the motherboard and other internal components - it operates both on battery and external AC adapter). If power supply has gone bad (typical from small laptop overheating), it could cause this type of behavior.
2. Connectors and cables - HD (SSD) connector cable is always a candidate - on small laptops, these cables are minuscule and folded - they tend to short out occasionally. If that happens, the behavior will be exactly as you described.
3. Motherboard - obviously, motherboard can cause these kinds of problems, there's no feasible repair strategy, you have to replace it. It's usually not worth doing on something like AspireOne.
The way to diagnose this is either test this component-by-component (take out power supply and test it - need testing equipment, or replace it and see if that helps. Then try the next thing).
The only other thing I can suggest is to see if the problems are tied to the temperature (does it feel hot and does power cut out only when it's overheating?), if yes, you can eliminate #2 from the list above and focus on #1 as most likely cause.

My guess with a length of time cutoff like that would be a fan died somewhere and it's overheating?
Can you immediately turn it back on after it dies? (If no, good clue)
Can you tell if a fan is blowing?
**This will sound crazy, but put in in the refrigerator for half an hour and then turn it on and run it. If it stays on longer (because it started cold) that would be a good indicator of an overheating problem.
