Yes, boot from a system rescue disk and copy the files off. I use System Rescue, it's not the easiest program to use but is very powerful http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

If your computer has a crippling virus and it won't work, is it possible to save the files on the hard drive?

Be certain to scan the saved files for any possible remnant of the culprit virus! It's no fun to simply re-infect your newly cleaned system.
