You can try by resetting the Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. This should work for both MacBook (Pro or not) and iMac desktop.
The PRAM stores the display and video settings such as refresh rate, screen resolution, number of colors amongst other things

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.

I have a Macbook Pro, and I recently had an issue with the keyboard. A number of the keys weren't working (I don't know if any of your other keys aren't responding). I took the laptop into the Apple Store, and they said it was a hardware issue that required replacement of the keyboard. Luckily, mine was under warranty, so it didn't cost anything.
I would suggest finding an external keyboard and hooking that up to the machine. See if, when you hit the F3 key (or whatever key controls screen brightness), the brightness changes. If not, I would suggest taking it into the Apple Store and asking one of the guys at the genius bar.

Mac screen brightness
Soomething happened to my Mac's screen: it isvery bright - it hurts my eyes. The controls on the keyboard do not work. What can I do?

If the above troubleshooting steps doesn't work, it's time to take the laptop/desktop to the Apple store for further investigation.

If you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro open up System Preferences and go to Displays. There's a slider at the bottom to manually control the brightness. If this doesn't help there's something wrong with your monitor.
