Try using something better than the stock cooler. Also follow very carefully the instructions for the heatsink compound; the layer of stuff must be very thin (there are many guides online describing the technique; you could check out the forums at www.overclocking.com for tips).
If you can't snag a new heatsink / fan, in the meantime you could try "lapping" the heatsink. This involves polishing the metal surface of the heatsink with increasingly fine grades of sandpaper so that it's nice and smooth, then applying the heatsink compound and attaching it to the CPU. Better heat transfer results in lower temperatures by at least a few degrees.

i7 temps ok geeks have at it
I just built a i7 920 gaming rig with a gtx 260 and I think I am having problems with the cpu temps. idle runs around 50-55c. I am using the stock heat sink and some antic formula 5 and have reapply the thermo paste a few times now different ways. using the bag on finger trick and pee sized drop, rice size all with the same temps what I'm I doing wrong or is this a normal temp for a i7.
also the room is at 21-22c and the
case is a cm690 with 6 fans 3 in and 3 exhaust. @stock 2.67 ghz

Idle temps for the Core i7 should be around 35-40 degrees, and under load you should see 55-60 degrees. There are several ways to decrease cpu temperature, I would suggest either trying a different cpu cooler like a Coolermaster or Zalman cpu cooler. Make sure that the heat sink is seated properly, I have had problems when the heat sink needed to be re-seated 3 times for it to get optimal contact. Hope it helps!

And another article from the same site on a user's experience with Arctic Silver:

It does seem in my experience to be good stuff; I've gotten noticeably lower temps with Arctic than with "generic" brand thermal paste, that much for sure.
