Trick or treating has declined over the years. Do you think this is going to continue to decline or will it recover this year?

For a while now, terror, media scares with isolated tragedies (I say this because I grew up with the whole "razors in apples" and "poison in caramels" stories, and my parents insisted on checking my candy before I eat it), I have noticed the steady decline of trick or treating. This year, it seems a little more anticipated, but is it going to actually happen or are we keeping the kids at home? Whats your take?

Trick or treating is not decreasing, it is morphing.

We no longer live in “neighbor” - hoods. We live in bedroom communities, commuter havens. Pick-up ball games have become organized. And so is trick or treating. Mall have T or T nights where you go from store to store to collect goodies. Fraternal organizations like the Elks, have community parties. Some towns have scheduled events or parades. One of the big things where I am is Trunk or Treat. People gather at a large parking lot where the kids go from car to car and the parents dispense treats from the open car trunk.

So find an organized event and go broomstick flying or black cat watching.

Now that's an answer I like hearing. Evolution. Either it dies or gets stronger. Thank you for making me smile. I don't have kids, and am likely never gonna for reasons as such side effects as dying and death... but Halloween is still one of my beloved holidays... the one day you could act like a lunatic and your parents couldn't say a thing about it.

There ahve been times in the past where Trick or Treating has declined. As a former business advisor who worked with the retail industry, I dealt with the Halloween market from time to time, and learned what caused this.

Every so many years, the Halloween industry changes course, and tries to ring a particular group of people in. Right now, we are coming to the end of the trend of trying to ring in adults into Halloween. Next year, you are bound to see a lot less slutty costumes on the market. You will see a decline in the number of adult costumes compared to the number of children's costumes.

Whenever retailers try to draw more adults into Halloween, there is a lul in the number of children going door to door, and a lul in the number of houses that are giving stuff out.

In fact, so far this year, we are seeing the worst numbers for Halloween in almost a decade. People are tired of the current trends, so they will have to change next year. You might argue that the economy has something to do with this downturn this year, but it does not. Last year (when the economy was worse) we had the best year for Halloween ever.

The fact taht there are more and more places that have, "safe days and nights," for kids also takes a number of kids off of the street in the evening on October 31st. More and more parents want to take their kids to malls and downtown areas to trick or treat. Essentially, there are still the same number of kids (roughly) but they are dispersed in other areas than your neighborhood.

I think it will decline because the streets are getting more dangerous each year
