Las Vegas is frequently called "the ninth island" in Hawaii (though a few other mainland U.S. cities claim the same label), as it is one of the most popular travel destinations for Hawaii residents. There are hotels, businesses, and entire communities in Las Vegas that subsist purely by catering to people visiting from Hawaii. One reason? Hawaii is one of only two states (Utah is the other) with no legalized gambling. Another would be the lower cost of living, which to Hawaii residents represent significant savings. It is very frequently cheaper to fly from Honolulu to Las Vegas for a vacation than it is to fly to a neighbor island.

Las Vegas is also a popular place for Hawaii residents to relocate, again due to the lower cost of living. Former Hawaii residents make up a significant portion of the population in some suburbs.

As far as tourist/souvenir stickers...since there is now service from both Aloha and Hawaiian airlines straight to Las Vegas, the travel is cheaper. Some LV residents will visit Hawaii, whereas before they would hop through Los Angeles or another city first.

Las Vegas is also a popular destination for Hawaii residents on vacation. Some move there because of the decent pay and a growing community of Hawaii residents. Cars that come to the mainland from Hawaii may still have their inspection stickers on the rear bumper.
