Why did Martha Stewart even need a visa to visit the UK. I thought any US citizen can visit UK up to 6 months stay without appying for one.

You do not need a visa to visit the UK. Martha Stewart was denied an entertainers/working visa because she's a convicted felon. She had business engagements in the UK and was not just going there for pleasure. The UK and US have the right to refuse anyone entry into the country if they have a criminal background
