I think it's what you said, as well as the fact that the bigger airlines have more debt and are in deep with bad fuel contracts. Smaller companies usually do better in worst economical times, because they are more flexible and usually adapt faster to a new reality.

Why are Southwest, Jetblue, and AirTran reporting earnings and Delta, UAL, and United Airways Group reporting losses?
Are consumers finding better bargins flying with the smaller value oriented airlines?

Yeah, that business model could be better adapted to some markets. But I think people still like to fly in bigger planes, which have a better safety record. But, as always, it's about price...
