A tour of Crete is a wonderful way to dive into the culture and history of Greece, both ancient and modern.
It's a 90 minute plane trip to Crete from Athens, or a 9 hour ferry ride across the Aegean Sea. The island is small enough to explore easily and yet has a wealth of landscapes, villages, seaside resorts and hiking trails, as well as great food and friendly people.
See http://www.cretetravel.com/why_Crete.htm for more good reasons.
I tend to avoid the resorts along the Heraklion coast and head for the interior villages.
You can rent a car, but I would recommend the excellent public bus system instead.
Renting a self-catering apartment offers you a place to put down roots as well as a good reason to buy fresh Cretan produce and cook your own meals. I especially liked staying in Archanes. http://www.cretetravel.com/Features/Archanes_visit/Archanes.htm
