Really depends on what you're looking for. In terms of most popular, cities are, unsurprisingly, and the top of the list. There's an article on the most visited attractions on Forbes Travel: http://www.forbestraveler.com/best-lists/most-visited-attractions-us-2009-story.html
For nature, go to the official website for the National Park Service, nps.gov
You might be surprised to find a National Park, State Park or Historical Monument within a few hundred miles of where you live.
My personal favorites in the U.S. are Denali, Glacier Bay and Prince William Sound in Alaska. Yosemite and Redwood in California. The White Mountains in New England, and the beaches of South Florida - Miami and South Beach - and the Caribbean.

Yosemite tours are a great way to see, understand, and appreciate the beauty of Yosemite National Park. Yosemite tours can be taken at Yosemite National Park from San Francisco, California. It would be easy to spend an entire summer exploring Yosemite National Park and its beauty but Yosemite tours range from a few hours if taken at the park to a few days if taken from San Francisco.
Yosemite tours that last one-day, although short, can cover most of the points of interest. Usually Yosemite tours will visit the Yosemite Valley where you can admire Half Dome, El Capitan, and the Yosemite Falls. More comprehensive Yosemite tours will include a visit to one of the three Giant Sequoia groves in Yosemite National Park. Yosemite tours can be found and booked online. It is best to book Yosemite tours in advance since tickets sell out during the peak season.

Siesta Key, Florida has the whitest, softest sand in the U.S and the sand does not get hot. Siesta Key is close to Sarasota, so there are a lot of things to do in the area.

If you are looking for ocean water sports and a tropical locale, try Maui. If you would like the mountains and snow, try the country to the north of Yosemite. The farther north you go, the less people. If you like the desert try Palm Springs or Tombstone. If you want a dry area in the mountains and few tourists, try Coudcroft, New Mexico. For lakes, try Minnesota.
