What's the ultimate carry-on luggage that can fit my Macbook Pro 15", a few document folders and clothes for 3 days?

I hate having to wait for checked luggage. I hate having more than one bag to carry with me. Finding a carry-on luggage that is big enough to carry my 15" Macbook Pro with clothes for 3 days is quite the challenge.

Please recommend me something based on your personal experience or refer me to a review of a particular item that answers my question.

Can it be done or I am dreaming?

Hey Matty,

I've traveled a lot with this bag. It's exceptionally sturdy and even after miles (and miles) of walking through airports and train stops (through the EU), this bag has served me well both for business and for personal trips.

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442506349&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302861417&bmUID=1256519382369

Specifically for your requirements, here's why I think this is the perfect bag:

1)
This bag has A LOT of features. Most of these features generally cost you 2 or 3 times as much in other brands.

Features like internal compression straps that hold your clothes in tightly. A separate internal shoe compartment, mesh sock pockets, well placed pockets, etc, etc.

2)
This bag can be easily carried on. It's easy because it is actually 2 bags in one.

You get a rolling wheeled clothes bag and a detachable backpack. You're allowed 2 pieces of carry on luggage and I have never had a problem. I even (albeit carefully) packed for an entire week and a half trip and carried on both ways.

The best part of the 2 bag in one deal is that you can easily store your laptop and other under seat goodies close by.

If you're like me, you're either first on the plane or last on the plane. If you're last, you often have to store your bag away from your seat. 3 quick clicks and the backpack is removed and is easily stored under the seat in front of you.

3)
I could really go on-and-on. I know that Mec.ca might not be your first choice for travel luggage. However, they do ship anywhere in the U.S. and believe me, it's well worth it.

I ruined 3 high priced pieces of luggage (the most expensive worth nearly $300) until I bought this. Really, it is perfect. You won't regret it.
Asker's Rating:
• Well Rob,

You nailed it. This bag is great! I've researched all of the recommendations given on here and they were all very good, but yours is best because the price and style feels right.

I love the idea of a backpack attached to it; this will be useful in so many situations.

I'm also in Canada right now visiting for a few weeks still, so I've ordered it online and should have it before the end of the week.

Couldn't have asked for more!

- Matt

1 quick note... In the image above, it looks like the large back case is a backpack with the straps shown.

Those straps are built to be completely concealed. I've only used those straps once. The rest of the time, this is a sturdy, easy to use wheeled roller that trips around airports with lighting speed.

that seems like the best option. I fly to bay area often and usually it is a 3 day trip. It might be hard to fit an extra pair of shoes in that bag but otherwise looks like great option.

Actually, I regularly carry an extra set of shoes (black vs. brown). The shoes sit at the bottom of the bag in a special compartment that expands when shoes are present. It's quite smart really. 3 days + shoes = no problem.

Yup

It's an amazing bag. I swear - I don't usually get excited about luggage. This bag is awesome. I bought one for a friend as a Christmas present and he says it is indispensable as well. I was recently in Ottawa (Canadian National Capital) and even saw a well known politician with the same bag.

The shoe compartment is in the large, rear rolling bag. Once the bag is unzipped, the whole front opens up and the first thing that you see is a flip out shoe compartment.

Crazy yes... both me and the bag :)

This site has heaps, they give dimensions and weight as well for each product.
http://theluggageprofessionals.com.au/index.php?cPath=52
eg
the Antler Tronic Mobile Office is large enough to fit your laptop and clothes
and the Caribee VIP Wheel Portfolio is also large enough

Prices are good, range from $130 up.
Also
CARIBEE City Flyer 19 Carry-On Trolley
"The size of this bag was designed to take advantage of the maximum carry-on luggage allowance of most airlines."
from http://rushfaster.com.au/product.php?pProductID=CAR-6483-BLACK
Caribee make a huge range of carry on bags this is just the medium sized one.

Just to check I used these laptop dimensions to check size.

Size and weight
Height:0.95 inch (2.41 cm)
Width:14.35 inches (36.4 cm)
Depth:9.82 inches (24.9 cm)
Weight:5.5 pounds (2.49 kg)

Hope this helps

I searched for the best carry-on luggage that would fit you. Try the Aeronaut, this comes in highly recommended and got great user reviews. This one comes in first on the list of five at about.com.

---quote---
he main compartment is accessed through a curved zipper opening and swallows a substantial stack of folded shirts/blouses/trousers/dresses; as you pack the Aeronaut, the end pockets act like bookends, keeping everything in the center compartment relatively flat and folded. The inside of the opening "hatch" features a convenient zippered mesh pocket to contain small items.

You can also choose between these 4:

SkyRoll Roll-up Garment Bag
Red Oxx Airborne Carry on Ruck Sack (C-Ruck)
Samsonite Pro-DLX Carry-On Upright / Mobile Office

I recommend this Briggs and Riley bag. They last forever and can expand to fit additional items. http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=20-inch-Carry-On-Expandable-Upright_U420LX

I have one and love it, I keep clothes and some papers in it though I usually carry my MacBookPro with my camera gear that I carry seperately in a Think Tank Airport Acceleration V2.0 or Think Tank Urban Disguise 50. However you can very easily put your laptop in to a sleeve (marware and incase make popular sleeves) and put it in the outside pocket or in with the clothes. This bag will fit on most aircraft except for the smaller Embraer aircraft with 1-2 seating (ERJ 145 and below) and Canadair RJ. It will fit on all mainline aircraft and ERJ-170 and larger regional jets.

I am able to fit enough clothing in this bag for a weeklong trip (as long as I wear a coat). This bag comes with a lock as well if you plan on leaving it in a hotel room and don't want anyone to be able to access it. Overall it is the best piece of carry on luggage I've ever owned.
