Egypt is on the top of my places- I- must-visit list. I am absolutely fascinated by what I have read about Egypt and its mysteries.
Since I haven't yet been to Egypt, I would like to mention the experience of someone else who had some interesting time in there, Napolean Bonaparte.
It is believed that Napolean while on his visit to the great pyramid asked to be left alone in the King's chamber and came out looking rather disturbed and said that he didn't want the incident mentioned again. Years later, when he was on his deathbed, a close friend asked him what really happened in the King's chamber. He was about to tell him and stopped. Then he shook his head and said, "No, what's the use. You'd never believe me." ,he never told anyone and took the secret to his grave. (It is interesting to note that there is an unsubstantiated story that Napoleon had hinted that he was given some vision of his destiny during his stay in the King's Chamber). I don't know how far this is true but you can read more about it in the article below,

My personal experience was that everything I was really curious about I got at the British Museum, such that when I found myself in Egypt and decided to check out the sites I didn't see anything that I hadn't been able to pre-visualize via from what I saw in the Museum...
Although... hmm... in that case... skip the Museum, or it could be a denouement experience.
In either case... just be clear... is it modern Egypt that he's interested in, or ancient Egypt?
They are two very different beasts, but if he's curious to see cross-links between the modern Egypt vs the Ancient time, one fun thing is to point out how the pyramids used to be encapsulated with a shell of limestone, which got peeled off down to the sandstone in 1356 and used to build fortresses and mosques in Cairo.

My 12 year old is fascinated extremely by Egypt. We want to go in a year.

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR LINKS! Personal experience is best :)

I loved it. I am not sure what your budget is but it was not inexpensive. The tour I took was an African-American Historical tour and was very informative. It included a cruise down the Nile. The tour was with Dr. Runoko Rashidi who travels there at least once a year. I believe he has a trip coming up in the summer 2010.

November to April is considered winter May to October summer. I went in April and it was still warm during the day but was cooler at night. I also got caught in a sand storm. This website may help: http://www.touregypt.net/climate.htm

I never go to Egypt, but I recognize some persons in Epypt by chatting on line, one of them is a guide,so know about Egpyt much, I may provide some suggestion to you, epypt is not very rich country and price of product and service is cheap,so you don't worry about the expense on traveling in the epypt,if you really wish to know about more about epypt ,you may visit the Britain Musem, because most of epypt relics is in it.what you can see is just pyramid and mummies.Of course, the beach is also good place, have a good time to you in Epypt.

Looks like you're getting some good answers. I take a different approach to this. Your 12 year old is fascinated at age 12. Ok. Will she still be fascinated a year or two from now? That consideration would probably take some of the edge off the financial stress this trip is likely to put on your family. Give her a couple of years and see it the fascination holds. She may learn the importance of holding on to your dreams, thinking long term, and as a parent, you may gain some more tools to give her a better future... like the value of patience. Jose Pineda

On that note, you might want to try exhibits that are in the US first. The MET has some great pieces

If your son is fascinated by the ancient period of Egyptian history, you might want to check out the British Museum first, as a stepping stone.
