Question

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
I am flyng on Hawaiian, trip already booked. I want to use American miles as an upgrade. Is this possible? And if so - where do I start?
I have miles with both airlines just not enough with Hawaiin to benefit.

Hawaiian Airlines only allows you to redeem "Hawaiian Miles" there is no language that indicates they accept "American Miles" But if you believe they are somehow affiliated you can contact the Miles department here.

I haven't tried to do this with Hawaiian, but I did try with another AA partner (LAN) and was told that the miles aren't transferable for upgrades. You can still earn AA mileage credit when flying Hawaiian, but just can't cross redeem miles. Seems silly to me, especially at a time when they're trying to improve customer loyalty, but I got the impression it is more of a logistical issue. If you hear anything else to the contrary, let me know!
