Dover is approximately 80 miles from London Gatwick Airport. According to Traveler's Toolkit, there are no direct public transport links between the two destinations but you can transfers via public transport between Gatwick and Dover with a connection in Central London. The least expensive method is would be to use the National Express Bus with a connection at Victoria Coach Station. However, that is also the slowest option. It would be faster but more expensive to travel by the Dover rail. There are several potential train routes, but the simplest would be to travel into Central London and connect to trains at either Victoria or London Bridge.
I have enclosed links for the Dover Rail and the National Express Bus. Since you are asking about a day in September 2009, you should confirm the bus or train times closer to your travel date. This link also provides detailed information: http://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/gatwick_dover.htm
