Verified Accounts is one way to distinguish real Twitter personalities versus imposters. But unfortunately, verified accounts is available only to a few select high profile Twitter accounts. There is no information if this will be a paid service or what requirements will be required to be a verified account, so we can only speculate at adoption rate.

A good rule of thumb is to always read the most recent tweets of a Twitter account you wish to follow. Look at the friends/follow ratio, look at the profile picture and background, look for and avoid spam Twitterers, and search for that Twitter account to see the interaction between this follower and the community at large. Following these suggestions will help you avoid being duped by fake Twitter personalities.
