The Civic Center Inn is not very expensive and located in the Tenderloin district. It has decent ratings on travelocity.com but note that some of the guests reviewing the hotel felt uncomfortable on the streets at night. Personally, I would book through travelocity.com, hotwire.com or a similar service. You are likely to get a cheaper rate than booking with the hotel directly. You will also be able to look at a variety of hotels that are in your price range. There are also a number of cheaper hotels that are near the airport.

Do not stay in the Tenderloin unless your looking to score some heroin! Not safe during the day or night for most that would be visiting the city! If you consider yourself to be street smart and can handle yourself well then by-all-means go for it!
If you go near Haight & Ashberry there is a killer pizza place called FAT SLICE just don't trip over any hippies dogs when you get out your car!

The Tenderloin, are you kidding me! I wouldn't stay there if it where free! What are you trying to put this persons life in danger! Did you just do a search and the cheapest hotel you could find was in The Loin! The question clearly states that they are looking for a NICE place not a s--t hole! I would look at the various travel websites that the previous poster suggested but in Daly City or near Castro. You will be safe walking around in the day as well as at night! Do not stay in the Tenderloin unless your looking to score some heroin! Not safe during the day or night for most that would be visiting the city! If you consider yourself to be street smart and can handle yourself well then by-all-means go for it!
