Istanbul has a fascinating mix of cultures, a historical center dating back to the ancient Greeks and is the gateway to the Silk Road. If what you are looking for is insight into the Middle East and Central Asia, Istanbul is the place to go!
It is a bustling city of more than 12 million people and connects Europe to Asia. You can wander through beautiful mosques, Byzantine churches, underground cisterns, the splendid maze of the Great Bazaar, taste exceptionally good Turkish cuisine, travel up the Bosphorus and meet delightful, friendly people. The history of Istanbul spans both Central Asian and Western civilization - and the fall of Constantinople spurred the great Navigators to go West.
Travel to Istanbul doesn't have to be expensive. There are hotels and restaurants to meet every budget, as well as good public transportation. It is pretty safe, for a big city, as well.
I've been to Istanbul at least a dozen times and never, ever tire of it.

My brother-in-law visited spain and had a wonderful time though. He said it was a very friendly country, Apparently there were parties in the streets at night and everyone danced and was very welcoming.
Wherever you end up going, i'm sure it will be an amazing time.

if i had the choice, i would choose Istanbul. i'm sure that both cities are wonderful but i love to shop and to sightsee while on vacation. Being able to spend my days visiting historical sites, and spend my nights browsing turkish bazaars would be awesome. My family and i are taking a huge once-in-a-lifetime vacation. We had it scheduled for this summer, a cruise that stopped in Italy, Greece, Egypt and Turkey--my dream cruise. Unfortunately though we had to reschedule for next summer and the new cruise does not include Turkey or Egypt. I'm a bit bummed about that!! My brother-in-law visited spain and had a wonderful time though. He said it was a very friendly country, Apparently there were parties in the streets at night and everyone danced and was very welcoming.

Both are interesting places to visit, but to my taste, there's a bit more to visit see in Istanbul than in Barcelona. And it's a bit more exotic as well. Have visited both cities twice, with a slight preference for Istanbul as result.
