There are indeed elk in New Mexico. However, the native elk were wiped out due to hunting pressure by 1909. Populations of Rocky Mountain elk were reintroduced from 1910 into the 1960s, and controlled hunting has been allowed since 1933. The current elk population in New Mexico is more than twice the 53,000 reported in 1984, and herd-reduction efforts were begin in some regions in 1999.
