You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Part of the confusion comes from the Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who was the one who told everyone to stop driving. Toyota itself hadn't issued a recall at that point, but noted that if it did, it would cost $2B USD. Then this morning, LaHood reversed himself and said for Toyota owners of the affected models to take their cars into a dealership because Toyota now thinks they know what caused the problem and has a fix for it.

For years Toyota had a good safety record. They just posted their first-ever loss for a quarter, and they've estimated the recall would cost $2B. That's the explanation, I think. They're trying to find the most cost-effective way to deal with this, and the Transportation Secretary jumped in first. As reported on NPR, "The final word from LaHood: 'What I meant to say or what I thought I said was, if you own one of these cars or if you're in doubt, take it to the dealer and they're going to fix it.' "
