Why is is Toronto Maple Leafs not Toronto Maple Leaves?

"The Maple Leafs say that the name was chosen in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment from World War I."

Since they are named after a group and not a thing (Maple Leaf), the plural of their name is Maple Leafs.

Personally, I think they should rename the team to "The Team That Will Never Win The Stanley Cup" and then they could avoid grammar problems altogether.

I could be wrong, but I think this person has been approached to be the Leaf's team manager next year:

They are named after an elite group of elite Canadian soldiers that fought in World War 1 called the Maple Leaf Regiment.

Because the plural is meant to refer to the entire name and not just the leaves part.

i.e. it is (Toronto Maple Leaf)s and not Toronto (Maple Leaf)s.
