Tom Daschele was never re-elected. After his defeat in 2004, he became an advisor at a lobby firm. His defeat in 2004 made him the first Senate leader in 50 years to be voted out of office. President Obama nominated him to serve as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, but he withdrew from the nomination due do tax problems.
