What us the best way to explain to children why daddy goes to work (or mummy)?

My wife told my 3 year old boy when putting him to bed how much daddy loves him, to which he replied "I know, and daddy loves work". I'm usually home for dinner every night but have had to work late the last couple of weeks which is unusual for me. So what is the best way to explain to a child why work is necessary, without making it all about money??

When ours were that age, we simply told them daddy goes to work to so we are able to have a home, food to eat, do fun things (insert his/her favorite thing you have done together recently) and to make it possible for our next adventure. Isn't daddy just fantastic?

By being exciting about dad/mom working in the tone of your voice, they normally will get excited also. Leaving it with a question enables them to let you know if they are having other fears which might need to be talked about, like separation anxiety and such.

i agree with bernice. i would talk about what mommy or daddy does at work and if possible let them visit daddy at work to see him. It's not always easy for a child this young to understand the nuances of everyday life. love and attention are not really separate things at this stage in development and so if daddy is at work all day, children think daddy must love being there! (if only they knew)

Just let you son know how much you love him by giving him a little extra when you come home. I know it's hard, we're tired and irritable sometimes when we come home, but spending 5 or 10 minutes reading or playing before bed with him can make all the difference in the world.

My kids are 7, 5 and 3. They hate when I leave for work. I simply tell them, hey mommy will be home later, I gotta go make money so we can get ( ) add in some toy or food they want. I tell them don't worry mommy will be home later, and I'll kiss you goodnight. I also tell them, the sooner you go to bed, the sooner you will see me in the morning. They are getting to the point they understand. But my daughter still cries everyday.
