Today is empathy day... please say something nice to someone on Mahalo Answers, Twitter or Facebook!

.... and tag it with #empathyday
BTW: should we start putting has tags at the end of our comments/questions to tag them?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Empathy by definition isn't saying nice things to people. Empathy is about compassion and putting yourself in someone else's shoes. I think generally if people need a day to remind them to be empathetic, there's a deeper problem with society. Empathy once a year won't do the world much good!

Well you know what they say about women with big feet. Wait, no... That's men.

Yes, but I have big feet, so it is harder for me to walk in someone else shoes.... wait, were you speaking metaphorically? I didn't understand you ;-)

So, are you against Mother's Day, Father's Day and all the other days that are designed to take a moment to recognize someone else?

Of course not. No more than I could be against birthdays, veteran's day, Martin Luther King day, etc. Giving someone a special day to recognize their contributions and remind them that they're appreciated is a little different, despite the fact that ideally we should show these people appreciation as much as possible. For people to need a designated day to be more generally compassionate isn't a BAD thing, but for some people who may think they're being a pretty good person by being empathetic once a year, they're completely missing the point. It's like when people do things for the good karma -- that's missing the point of doing good in the first place.

Anyway, that's also a reason I think "empathy day" isn't exactly a national craze like Mother's day is!

Some suggestions on what NOT to say:
  1. That outfit doesn't make you look as fat as your other clothes do.
  2. Some couples just talk in bed.
  3. What some people lack in beauty and intelligence, they make up for in other ways. I'm sure we'll figure out how you do it soon.
  4. Have you thought of taking up smoking? It might help that breath/body odor you have.
  5. I'm so glad you're not sensitive about smallness like so many other guys are.
  6. You know, your mother was right about ____. (Doesn't matter what you put in the blank).
  7. I thought combovers/mullets were a think of the past, but yours looks good!
  8. You look so much better with a little make up!
  9. I admire someone who can wear something so hideous!
  10. Really, most women prefer a nice car over something as intangible as personality and good looks.
What can I say? I'm bad at empathy!! But then, so were a lot of other people:

  • "A modest person, with much to be modest about." Winston Churchill
  • "I've had a wonderful time, only this wasn't it." Groucho Marx
  • "He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway)
  • "Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?" Ernest Hemingway (about William Faulkner)
  • "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I'll waste no time reading it." Moses Hadas
  • "There's nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won't cure." Jack E. Leonard
  • "She is a peacock in everything but beauty." Oscar Wilde
  • "He has Van Gogh's ear for music." Billy Wilder

You know jasoncalacanis...you have the perfect face for radio!

j/k =P

It wouldn't be a bad feature. I'm guessing you would want to make a little drop down list as opposed to the # feature(except emails and tweets of course) since most people would probably forget to do it when they are on web. Have it default to none, and give the option.
