To diet effectively, must you always be a little bit hungry? Is hunger the cue that you're now burning calories?

Or am I being completely delusional? ;)

It has been my experience that in order to lose more than 1 to 2 pounds a week, it is very important to use the "hunger and fullness" principle. Stop eating when you are full and don't eat again until you are really hungry. One word of caution, this approach can be dangerous for individuals with diabetes. The trick is to determine if it real hunger for food or if you just eating out of habit, due to boredom or stress, etc. For weight loss, using this approach is effective, but you will be actually hungry on a very regular basis, although at the beginning it could be longer than a day before you are truly hungry. In my personal opinion, this approach of waiting until you are really hungry is the most effective way to lose weight. It seemed to work a lot better than the philosophy pushed by so many commercial diet programs that one should never wait until they are really hungry to eat. The other part of this, for truly effective weight loss, is to stop eating when you are full. You actually have to stop a little before you feel completely full. It takes a bit of experimenting to determine how full you need to feel at the point you need to stop eating, so that you will not be too full twenty minutes after the meal.

Also recognize that our "full response" is delayed. There is a great problem in our society in that we are actually full long before we "feel" full. That's why eating slowly is very important.

I believe that being comfortable with hunger is important in a weight management plan. I think, in Western society, we've come to the conclusion that we should never feel hunger. If we feel hunger, then something is wrong. Just because you're a little hungry, doesn't mean you need to eat. Your body has PLENTY of energy stores that it can take from.

Hunger is NOT the cue that you are now burning cals. I can be full and go exercise. Exercise is burning energy (calories). You are ALWAYS burning calories... and I don't think you burn any more cals if you are hungry. It just means that the body will be taking energy from energy stores (fat first, muscle second) instead of the food.

Your diet should not be complete and it is true that hunger represents the burning calories, the stored calories in the form of fat are burned and used up to perform daily activities.

nooooooooo way man. if you wanna burn of the carbs, n i promise this will work. you need to eat small, frequent meals and drink a heeelllll lot of water. a long long long time ago when there was barley any water. our bodies kept a storage of water just in case we needed a bit. so know our bodies hold about 5 pounds of water weight.

so you drink loads of water n u convince your body that there will not be an immediate shortage of water. n you lose weight. as my meerkat friend says.... simpples ;)

Hi,

In order to lose weight there is no need to diet at all! Furthermore, it is absolutely possible to lose weight without feeling hungry. In fact, feeling hungry may be a sign that your body is invoking its 'Anti-Starvation Response'.

When this happens, your body decreases the output of thyroid hormones, increases cortisol output, increases the activity of fat-storing enzymes and of course, increases appetite.

The fact is, your body burns calories all day long. If you want to increase that amount simply perform some exercise, increase your muscle mass (muscle burns more calories) and have small, frequent meals.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Steve.

Depending on the diet, to diet effectively, yes you must be a little bit hungry. You know why diets don't work, because everyone's body is different. We all metabolize, burn and use calories differently.

One thing is true though, if you intake less than you burn, then you will lose weight.

Another philosophy in weight loss is to burn calories. Hunger does NOT burn calories. It just means that your body 'thinks' it needs more calories. To burn calories you must be active. Your body uses calories all the time, but to BURN them you must be doing something. Trust me on this one ;)

FORGET about diets and learn to eat and live a healthy lifestyle. Fresh fruits, raw & cooked vegetables, protein and stay away from processed foods. Exercise a 30 minute walk every day will keep you feeling healthy as you find your endurance building.

Here's the motto: ENERGY IN - ENERGY OUT

Whatever you eat in calories a day that's what you should be burning a day. It's that simple.

Actually, being hungry, I find, is one of the least effective methods of dieting. When your body feels like it's starving, it begins to save up all of it's calories and horde them away. This is a survival method for days when famine was a bit more of an issue. The most effective diet, for me, is eating several small low-calorie snacks or meals throughout the day. whenever you eat, you metabolism raises to digest the food you've just put in. By eating every few hours you are stoking your metabolic fire and keeping your body running hot. Being hungry is not a good thing, even when trying to drop a few lbs.
