A.D. is short for "Anno Domini" which translates to "The year of our Lord" so this would mean that all of the years proceeding the birth of Jesus Christ including the years He was alive, those years would also be considered A.D. I think @buddawiggi meant "subsequent to" not "proceeding" which does not make sense in the sentence.
