I have very deep and personal reasons for honoring all U.S. Military veterans and active duty personnel, and their families.

We should thank God every day for these men and women who are willing to give their lives for our freedom.

Many who are better individuals than I will ever be have died in the prime of their lives and left behind heartbroken and grief stricken families, some of whom never recover from their loss.

How humbling it should be to know there are people who don't even know us, yet are willing to give their lives for our freedom. I can think of no-one who should receive more honor, respect and gratitude.

I did not mean to create all the confusion with this question.
So to everyone I apologize for my lack of putting thought into this question.
I also want to apologize to all of the international members, I did not mean to offend anyone,
I am a US Vet and I hold The US Veterans Day special.
I have decided to mark this question unanswered and tip all the veterans
5 Mahalo dollars for there participation. ( and Thank You for your service )
I hope everyone feels this is fair.
and again I do apologize to any and all for my lack of thought.

The way I read the question, you would like US military veterans to say so. The question, though well intended, seems to have caused confusion.

At any rate, I served in the United States Navy. I can't say I made any particular sacrifices as I spent my years pretty quietly in Europe and the US. But I did my part to keep the Navy running smoothly and a strong deterrent to foes.

It's very kind of you to do this to thank veterans. Thank you.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force (seven years). It was my honor to serve my country and its members.

I'm also married to an U.S.A.F. vet, my dad's an army vet and my father-in-law is another Air Force veteran. So, from all of us, thank you! :)

Hats off to all the soldiers (veterans or active) in the world, who served or are still serving for their nations. I salute them and I honour them more than anyone else in this world. They sacrificed the golden period of their lives so that we can live in peace. They are the actual super-heroes and real life Ramboes. Perhaps they deserve much more than respect. May God bless them and make their lives happy, healthy and peaceful. Salute!

Really sorry to vote uninteresting.

# Mahalo don't mark anyone as veteran or non veteran in any spears or category.

# Are you want to waste your tip ? Tip some one or vote some questions to recognize them.

# I don't know your motive.

Now you either can add my name or not. But I am really sorry to say words of above.

Thanks

THIS IS MY MAIN ANSWER. Please consider this comment as answer. Because there is now way to edit now the main answer.

I am not US citizen but I will say to US veteran Thank You.

I know everyone loves his country's vets. Today the world is becoming a global village here all are we related. So there is no way to ignore some one. So if I should respect to my country, I must love you too. Because social science says that love to the country give born love to all (world).

So I think here is a opportunity to me also to show my bow downed head to the spirit to the veterans who are works for his country. Because I know when I will show my love to your national heros then you will also be recognized to give it back to mine.

Sorry for my bad answer above, it was a misunderstanding. Sorry.

Thanks

I am a US Air Force retiree married to an active duty Air Force guy who would stay active duty forever if they would let him. I have an active duty AF son and one in the AF ROTC program in college. I can't say that I made the sacrifices even close to comparable to those who came before me in the military and certainly not to comparable to those who still serve. I have friends whose spouses stuffer from very serious PTSD and it takes a toll on the entire family.

If you'd like to read about the impact on an injured vet and family I encourage you to read the blog of this young Wife of an Wounded Marine

I wasn't able to make it to yesterday's ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery but I am sure it was one that would send chills down your spine as Echo Taps brought it to a conclusion. I was able to take part in Flag planting at the cemetery for Memorial Day and welcome many Filipino and American veterans to the memorial. The cemetery here is the largest outside of US soil. More than 17,000 killed in WWII are buried here. From every point where you stand within the grounds you see rows and rows of grave markers.

The link above has pictures of the cemetery. I add this one, made on Memorial Day.

There are many wars that I would have supported, I would even support veterans who did not know what war they were getting themselves into.....but I am sorry I can not jump on the band waggon and thank every single veteran of every single war. I do not believe in war, it is one thing if we go into a war as defense but I can not support anyone who goes into a a war knowingly under false pretenses. I Can not agree with or honor anyone who voluntarily signed up for duty during the Iraq War, what a disgrace that war was to this country..it did not make this country more secure it actually made this country less secure. We were lied to...telling us that the Iraqis were making nuclear weapons, the whole yelllow cake thing. Why is it such a taboo in this country to stand up and say that you do not support people who invade a country that did not attack us. George bush tried to drill into our heads that 9/11 was caused by iraqis when infact all obut two of the 19 people involved were saudi's. There was no draft like in vietnam (I wholeheartedly suppport vietnam vets who were drafted) though this was another war that did not protect the free world from the supposed threat of communism. Sorrry but we have never preemptively attacked another country, this was unprecedented and caused great harm. so thank you to veterans who protected us in wwI and wwii and thank you to the boys who were drafted to be killed in vietnam you had no choice, but no thank you to those who willingly went in to Iraq even after it was known not to be producing nuclear weapons.

I am a conscientious objector and generally believe war causes more war, violence feeds violence...and I am glad we have a president finally who is willing to use diplomatic approaches to solving modern issues, war should be reserved only for defense against real threats. This is 2009 not the middle ages we do not conduct crusades anymore.

Thanks for speaking up, tboz. You made your point very clearly, and I can agree, up to a point.

Yes, some people volunteered after it was apparent to many of us that we were lied into war. I don't think that - even then - you should hold the volunteers to a different standard.

I don't think that it is fair to assume that their motivations to join the military were to support a war which you and I don't agree with, rather than to serve the country in whatever way they could. Of course, it is also important to remember that there are always - wartime or not - some people who volunteer for the military post-high school because that is what they were destined to do (grades, career, family).

I think it is very hard for you to legitimately try to distinguish which servicemembers you can thank and which you won't. Further, I think you serve your principles far better by not trying to make that distinction and focusing your attention on the political forces (and people) who ordered the servicemembers into combat/nation-building missions with which you disagree.

doubleminaz's Avatar
doubleminaz | 2 years, 6 months ago Report

That's a fair point, too. We have seen how scared the President got when the talk of a draft began to get more serious. Still.....

tboz's Avatar
tboz | 2 years, 6 months ago Report

You make a good point about focusing attention on the political forces rather than those who were ordered into service. Being an idealist I feel that if people did not so readily sign up for the military, (which seems to actually be the trend now), those in command might think twice about using the limited number of forces for yet another needless war with say iran or whoever.

I should have not answered your question as I am not a US military veteran myself but I come from a military family (my uncles, husband and grandfather). And this maybe late but my grandfather had served in the Philippine Veterans (and fight against the guerillas) but he died already in 1995 and had not received any single cent from the government. Sorry to say that but that's true! Just remembering that he had served our country is enough to make him a winner. His name's Carlos Ocaña.

I'm glad you answered it, ai-ai. (Many non-veterans did, including me.) One of the things I like about discussions like this at Mahalo is the international input; we Americans often get too nation-centric (to make up a compound word which I am defining to mean "the tendency to view the world mainly from the perspective of your own country").

I agree with Safiqulislam. When you want to thank someone...tip the answer...and that person...sorry....uninteresting for me too. Plus...i think a veteran ( in this case ) is a person who spent a long time on the website, but not necessarily a person who helped you the most...So...I dont see the point. If you want to tip a veteran, this is not a way to put it.
I also find this question uninteresting because it sounds like you are asking people to beg for your money.

Sorry if I'm harsh...It's just my point of view.

I'm sorry that there was a misunderstanding on this question. buttonpusher, did you edit it to make it more clear after it became obvious that there was a misunderstanding? I think that would explain this very innocent situation.

And, it should be a reminder, too, to all of us, how Mahalo is an international site and we need to keep that in mind in our questions, answers, etc. VERY COOL!
