Depending on the version of the TiVo, it is possible to hack the PROM and install a version of Linux on it. I don't think you will be that happy with it because, as a computer, a TiVo is a pretty underpowered box. Without the service there isn't a whole lot you can do with it.
One other option, sell it to someone who wants to use it and use that cash towards a PC that you can run MythTV or MediaPortal.

How do you make your old TiVo work as a DVR?
I have a old TiVo and I want to use it as a standard DVR. I don't want to pay for the service for a second TiVo. I just want to record TV with it.

For the series 2, at least, all you have to do is plug it in and you can use it to pause live TV. Not good for much else, but I use one like this in my bedroom just in case I'm watching something and I get a phone call. I'm thinking about selling it though, because it's just another thing taking up space, and the utility of being able to pause TV just isn't that great - isn't it hilarious how far we've come in 8 years? Pausing live TV was amazing back then!

You can use an unsubbed TiVo as a dumb VCR, but you are limited to manual recordings. Generally, the live pause feature and the manual recording options make it a VCR that doesn't need tapes. It will however, nag you for updated guide data.
