The MediaPortal application is pretty simple to install straight out of the box. I usually install in on a fresh Windows XP install with the most recent updates.
The manual for MediaPortal can be found here: http://www.team-mediaportal.com/manual/MediaPortal_Manual_Index
The installer is pretty straight forward and will download any missing required software that you don't have. The only other piece of software that I would recommend installing would be some soft of a codec pack to cover any possible playback codecs that you might be missing.
I use K-Lite ( http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm ) . The basic install has pretty much everything that you will need.
