I believe you will have to call them and they will have to activate the DVR, they will charge you 5 dollars a month for the second unit. Your current card should work in the old DVR, the problem is when one is activated it will shut down the other one. I would just have them re-active the old one for 5 dollars a month.

You won't be charged a 5 dollar mirror fee UNLESS you are adding a receiver without removing one.

How can I hook up an old Phillips DTV TiVo that's been inactivated? I still have DTV service.
I replaced the Phillips DTV TiVo with a DTV HD DVR and would now like to hook up the TiVo to another TV in the house. When I do it I get a error message telling me to call DTV to activate (I'm guessing they'll tell me I have to pay something - which I don't want to do)

Activating an Old Directivo is pretty easy. Just call DTV. You MIGHT have to spend 20 dollars on a new Access card, but they MAY activate the receiver without charging you the fee for a new card depending on which CSR you get, and their mood. You won't be charged a 5 dollar mirror fee UNLESS you are adding a receiver without removing one.
